PURCELL'S MASTERPIECE PERFORMED FOR THE EUROPEAN GENERATIONAL RELIEF

The director associated with Les Arts Florissants, Paul Agnew, will be conducting the 22nd Ambronay European Baroque Academy and presenting a stunning programme at Peralada inspired by the story of Dido with extracts from the opera Didon by Henry Desmarest and the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. The love story between the queen of Carthage and the Trojan warrior inspired the great English composer Purcell to create a timeless work that is still performed today at the world's leading opera houses. The modest proportions (shorter than an hour with a reduced orchestra) make it the perfect theme for a training programme for young musicians. The music is excellent from start to end; from the overture in the à la française style to Dido's final lament, When I Am Laid in Earth. Agnew has selected different extracts from Desmarest's Didon to open the programme. A tragic opera that is not performed very often, but in its time was very well received at the première at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1693, just four years after Purcell's opera. The music is truly beautiful and the libretto offers the lead performer a wonderful portrait of a woman. A performance that is the public dissemination of an education project that brings together young musicians – selected from the best in Europe – and who are part of this Academy, is coming to the Festival. Peralada is the only performance in Spain of this incredible education project.
