THAÏS: THE STORY OF TWO JOURNEYS IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS
Athanaël and Thaïs are the two great protagonists of one of the most beautiful operas by French composer Jules Massenet, which is becoming a true rediscovery in opera houses everywhere. Inspired by the novel Thais by Anatole France, the story centres on two antagonistic characters and their personal journeys in opposing directions. The first, that of the courtesan who redeems herself before God; the second, that of the Cenobite monk who will renounce his faith to give himself up to love and worldly desire for the enchanting and attractive Egyptian prostitute. Thaïs will be coming to the festival this summer, in concert version, for the first time and will do so with the participation of the Teatro Real’s stable foundations. The eroticism and musical mysticism present throughout the work will feature a truly luxurious line-up of voices, led by the great and unrivalled Plácido Domingo, who will be singing alongside extraordinary soprano Ermonela Jaho; who audiences at Peralada will recall for her superb Madama Butterfly last year in the most recent Peralada opera production. The participation of the Resident Choir and Orchestra of the Teatro Real under the baton of Patrick Fournillier, an expert in the work and world of Massenet, promises an evening to go down in the annals of the Festival’s history.
