THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF ORIOL BROGGI

Throughout its history, the Peralada Festival has premièred a significant number of in-house productions and world premières in the world of opera. And it’s no secret that many of these commissions were awarded to theatre directors who had had no experience of the classical genre. The more outstanding examples include Calixto Bieito with Bizet’s Carmen; the staging of The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, by Debussy and D’Annuzio with La Fura dels Baus; Carlos Santos and his production of The Barber of Seville, by Rossini; and Comediants and their colourful Orfeo ed Euridice, by Gluck. Well, for this edition the festival has commissioned a version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute from the acclaimed Oriol Broggi. In this sense, the theatre director says: “I’m making my opera début with this fantastic commission, the staging of The Magic Flute as part of the Peralada Festival. Just like Tamino, I’ll let myself be transported and go deep into the Kingdom of the Night, I’ll look for love and even try and sleep with you.” Starting with an almost bare stage, solemn singers slowly being to emerge as they recount the adventures. Broggi presents “a magical, complex and yet simple adventure that has intrigued me ever since I was young, when my parents helped me discover it. This fascinating children’s story that hides symbols and interpretations behind the many hidden clues in the score and libretto. I’ll be starting from an almost empty stage, I’ll take the music and voice and make them the protagonists. By interweaving these elements, the story will start to take shape, it’ll become…” As the protagonists of this singspiel, Peralada has a cast of top-flight voices; tenor Liparit Avetisyan, baritone Adrian Ërod, soprano Kathryn Lewek and two outstanding Castell de Peralada Festival Prizes in the Viñas Competition; sopranos Olga Kulchynska (2015) and Anaïs Constans (2017). Mercedes Gancedo, Anna Alàs, Francisco Vas and Andreas Bauer complete the vocal section. Accompanied by the resident line-ups at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, directed by its resident conductor Josep Pons, it promises to be an evening of great emotions. Broggi concludes: “I’ll try and explain the sensation of smallness I feel when performing Mozart’s music. I’ll try and achieve a balance between reason and emotion that his music awakens in me. And through this theatricality, I’ll ensure that it creates a perfect link between music and singing. I’ll enter and depart from the Night so I can share the experience with you.”
