The fascinating Turandot by Puccini, one of the most-loved operas by audiences and Puccini's last opera, is coming to the Festival for the first time with a new production with stage director Mario Gas and stage design by Paco Azorín. A new production that will become part of the list of the festival's new productions, and of its opera legacy, being the third opera built in workshops in the Alt Empordà, joining the titles of Andrea Chénier by Giordano (2014) and Otello by Verdi (2015); two acclaimed productions that highlighted the festival's skill at production and construction in the realm of international opera.
This legendary opera in the repertoire, of great stage complexity and vocal demands, features an exceptional cast starring soprano Iréne Theorin (Princess Turandot), tenor Roberto Aronica (Calaf), and soprano Maria Kazarava (Liù). In the orchestra pit, the music will be performed by the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu conducted by Gampaolo Bisanti. The voices of Andrea Mastroni, Francisco Vas, Manel Esteve Madrid, Vicenç Esteve Madrid, together with the Coro Intermezzo conducted by Enrique Rueda as guest conductor, complete the rest of the cast.
A new production that neither lapses into certain stereotypes nor rejects the essence of the work: mythology, magic, sensuality and orientalism are firmly part of this year's Turandot. A contemporary show but essentially Puccini, presented from the personal approach of the stage director. A stage direction that will seek to maintain respect for the story of Turandot as a stage piece, but that conveys new times to the audience and a more modern vision through the stage design and directing.

An opera that touches the heart, for two exceptional evenings, at a Festival that has become firmly established for opera and great voices.
