The most surprising aspect of the Ligeti Quartet is to see how, in a Hungary closed to avant-garde musical influences, the composer from Transylvania finds, after Bartók, an undeniably modern own language. For his part, Schumann composed this indisputable masterpiece after the Quartets dedicated to Clara. This work is one too, although the first interpretation was by Felix Mendelssohn. Schumann’s work, which stirred up varying opinions among people such as Wagner, Liszt and Berlioz, which was heard live and today is considered the first great quartet for piano in the history of western music. |
