There are parallels in the lives and concerns of Debussy and Albéniz that come together in their idealised vision of Granada. For Debussy, it is one more step in his search for new sonorities that would end up taking him to the sound of the Gamelans of the island of Java. For Albéniz, a land and a musical culture in which Muslim and Christian sonorities and cultures are blended. Both composers, who knew and admired each other, have this virtual encounter in Granada through such suggestive works as El Albaicín, La Puerta del Vino and Soirée dans Grenade. |
