A great mediaeval frieze with the intimate nature of a chamber opera

DIÀLEGS DE TIRANT E CARMESINA

DIÀLEGS DE TIRANT E CARMESINA
Once again this year, the Castell de Peralada Festival is committed to opera and new creation by hosting the premiere of Diàlegs de Tirant e Carmesina, a new chamber opera focusing on the most intimate episodes of the novel by Joanot Martorell, the ones devoted to the relationship between the two protagonists. In this project, playwright Marc Rosich – who in 2007 adapted the mediaeval novel for Calixto Bieito’s hugely successful theatre production – and composer Joan Magrané – Queen Sofia Award for Composition – take seduction and sensuality as the dramatic mechanism of the idea. The piece takes on the form of variations on the theme of the couple falling in love, and the comings and goings of this relationship from the moment Tirant sees Carmesina for the first time and she seduces him with the famous mirror until their separation and tragic end. As a counterpoint to the couple, two opposing figures, Pleasure-of-My-Life and the Placid Widow, will also appear on stage, performed by the same mezzosoprano. With set and stage design by artist Jaume Plensa, Peralada presents a new look at the mediaeval novel turned into an opera libretto with concise music of mediaeval airs. Promoted by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació, the project is part of the celebrations to mark 25 years of the initiative.
