BALLET MARIÏNSKY IN SAINT PETERSBURG

BALLET MARIÏNSKY IN SAINT PETERSBURG
A new opportunity to enjoy the best ballet company in Saint Petersburg, and probably for many, the best in Russia and the world. A mixed programme where the music of Chopin and Liszt inspire three of the great choreographers of the last century. Chopiniana by Michel Fokie is a clear homage to the Romantic age with its white ballet, light dances of ethereal sylphs and a constant yearning to achieve perfection. In the Night, a short ballet created in 1970, North American Jerome Robbins reconciles a stage in shadow with four of Chopin’s nocturnes through three unique couples. The evening ends with the passionate ballet Marguerite and Armand that Britain's Frederick Ashton created expressly for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. On the musical base of the Piano Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt, this ballet inspired by the novel La Dame aux Camélias, is without a doubt one of the most moving of Ashton’s works. The pure academicism and unequalled tradition of the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet make its visit to the festival seen as a major event and unmissable date for classical dance lovers.
