TRIPLE BILL - 50 ANNIVERSARY

HOUSTON BALLET

HOUSTON BALLET
THE DEBUT OF A COMPANY WITH A DIVERSE CHOREOGRAPHIC STYLE FORGED IN EXCELLENCE

In 1969, a troupe of fifteen young dancers made their début on the stage of the Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, Texas. Thus was born the Houston Ballet; a company that has steadily evolved to become the fifth largest ballet company in the United States. In 2003, acclaimed Australian choreographer Stanton Welch took over the artistic direction, since when the Houston Ballet has undergone a considerable transformation, raising its level of classical techniques, introducing works by renowned choreographers into the repertoire and recruiting new talents into the company. On its first visit to Catalonia, it is coming to the Festival Castell de Peralada as part of the Spanish tour to mark its 50th anniversary. With this Triple Bill, the company will be presenting its stage identity through three choreographies: Clear, an abstract ballet by Welch with music by Bach and costumes by leading fashion designer Michael Kors, created in 2001 for the American Ballet Theatre of New York after the 9/11 attack. An explosive choreography of huge emotional impact brimming with spectacular pirouettes, leaps and impressive spins; In Dreams, a fantastic and impressive dance created by Trey McIntyre to the music of Roy Orbison; and Nosotros, set to Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Rachmaninoff, it is an abstract piece by Welch, a brilliant celebration of classical technique displaying the present and future stars of the Houston Ballet in one of the favourite works of audiences and critics alike. The Festival is opening the best way: by maintaining its idyll with this art of a majestic beauty.
